GATHERING

Prayer:
Lord, foolish we are, believing that we can rule ourselves by picking the different people to ruleover us. That desire is part of who we are. That is: sinners. Help us, then, not to think it is moresignificant than it is, but also give us and those in the places of power enough wisdom toacknowledge our faults and failures. Help us even laugh at ourselves, for without humor ourlives cannot be humane. We desire to dominate and are thus dominated. Free us, Lord, forotherwise we perish. Amen.

Announcements:
The number of COVID19 cases in our immediate area is such that we will continue to only offerworship online until it is reasonably safe for us to reopen.
Until that time, we will continue to offer mid-week prayers, live videos, and email devotionals.
Online giving can be made on our About page on the church website, cokesburyumc.church which will be linked in the video description for live worship as well as checks through the mail.

Hymn 249 – Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus:
Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in his wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of his glory and grace.

Prayer:
Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that, as the Scriptures are read and your Word proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today…

And as you taught us, so now we pray… Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

PROCLAIMING

Scripture – Matthew 23.1-12:
Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat; therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them. They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long. They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have people call them rabbi. But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all students. And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father — the one in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted.

Hymn 369 – Blessed Assurance:
V1. Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.
Refrain
This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long; This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.
V2. Perfect submission, perfect delight, visions of rapture now burst on my sight; Angels descending bring from above echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
Refrain
V3. Perfect submission, all is at rest; I in my Savior am happy and blest, Watching and waiting, looking above, filled with his goodness, lost in his love.
Refrain

Sermon: The Most Important Election In History

RESPONDING

Prayer:
Lord, infuse our lives with the joy of your Spirit. We know only as we are known. Illumine our lives with knowledge of you, that we may see that our endings are beginnings. Wrench our closings open so that we will not fear suffering, and so learn that it is only through our suffering that you make us your agents. Compel us, make us free that we manifest the joy of friendship with you and one another. Amen.

Offering – Reminder for online giving, through the mail, or the drop slot at the church.

Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
