Hymn 249 – Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus:
Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in his wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of his glory and grace.

Lord, help us not to be put off by you. You often talk, through scripture, in ways that make us uncomfortable. You intrude into areas that we would prefer to keep off limits. You make demands upon us that we don’t think we can meet. Sometimes you confuse us and push us past the boundaries of comprehension. Give us grace, Lord, to hear you speak and, upon hearing you, to receive you, and in receiving you, faithfully to fill you as you are, rather than as we would like you to be…

Our own joys and concerns…

And as you taught us, so now we pray… Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Mark 3.20-35:
And the crowds came together again, so that they could not even eat. When his family heard it, they went out to retrain him, for people were saying, “He has gone out of his mind.” And the scribes you came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.” And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, “How can Saran cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered. Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin” — for they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.” Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.” And he replied, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

Hymn 558 – We Are the Church:
I am the church! You are the church! We are the church together!
All who follow Jesus, all around the world! Yes, we’re the church together!
V1. The church is not a building, the church is not a steeple,
The church is not a resting place, the church is a people.
V2. We’re many kinds of people, with many kinds of faces,
All colors and all ages, too, from all times and places.
V3. Sometimes the church is marching, sometimes it’s bravely burning,
Sometimes it’s riding, sometimes hidden, always it’s learning.
V4. And when the people gather, there’s singing and there’s praying,
There’s laughing and there’s crying sometimes, all of it saying:
V5. At Pentecost some people received the Holy Spirit
And told the Good News through the world to all who would hear it.

Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
