Micah – 11/13/2022

Call to Worship
L: Come before the Lord with a humble heart.
All: We come letting go of selfish ambition and conceit.
L: For the Lord will save humble people and brings down those who are haughty.
All: God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble
L: May the same mind that is in Christ be in you.
All: Who poured himself out, taking the role of a servant.
L: With humility comes wisdom.
All: The Lord guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.

Song – Praise to the Lord, the Almighty – UMH 139
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul praise him, for he is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, now to his temple draw near; join me in glad adoration!
Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigning
bears thee on eagle’s wings, o’er in his keeping maintaining.
God’s care enfolds all, whose true good he upholds.
Hast thou not known his sustaining?
Praise to the Lord who doth prosper thy life and restore thee,
surely his goodness and mercy here daily attend thee.
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do,
who with his love doth befriend thee.
Praise to the Lord, who doth nourish thy life and restore thee,
fitting thee well for the tasks that are ever before thee.
Then to thy need God as a mother doth speed,
spreading the wings of grace o’er thee.
Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him!
Let the amen sound from his people again;
gladly forever adore him.

Prayer: (All) God of justice, you sent your servant Micah to proclaim justice and peace to a world that lacked both. Make us instruments of justice and peace, so that your world might prosper. We pray these things in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Scripture Reading – Micah 5:2-5; 6:6-8
But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore, he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has brought forth; then the rest of his kindred shall return to the people of Israel. And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; and he shall be the one of peace. “With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with ten thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord required of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
L: For the Word of God in scripture; for the Word of God within us and for the Word of God among us we say:
All: Thanks be to God.

Song – Humble Thyself in the Sight of the Lord – TFWS 2131
Bob Hudson CCLI#26564*
Humbly thyself in the sight of the Lord. Humble thyself in the sight of the Lord,
and he shall lift you up, higher and higher and he shall lift you up.

Statement of Faith
P: We believe: The poor in spirit are blessed,
All: and theirs is the kingdom of heaven;
P: those who mourn are blessed,
All: And they will be comforted;
P: the meek are blessed,
All: and they will inherit the earth;
P: those who hunger and thirst for righteousness are blessed,
All: and they will be filled;
P: the merciful are blessed,
All: and they will receive mercy;
P: the pure in heart are blessed,
All: And they will see God.
P: the peacemakers are blessed,
All: and they will be called children of God;
P: those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake are blessed.
All: and theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
P: We believe we are blessed when people revile us and persecute us and falsely utter all kinds of evil against us because of Jesus Christ.
All: We shall rejoice and be glad, for our reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before us. Amen.
Adapted from Matthew 5:1-12 by Robert Patrick Hernan.

Song – How Shall I Come Before the Lord – WAS 3124
Dean McIntyre General Board of Discipleship of UMC 2005
How shall I come before the Lord and bow my self with heart outpoured?
And shall I come with offering? What shall I give? What shall I bring?
Will finest gifts bring God’s delight? Will wealth bring favor in God’s sight?
What must we be? What must we do? What does the Lord require of you?
Let justice shine in all your ways. Let loving kindness rule your days,
that, as this earthly path you trod, you shall walk humbly with your God

David Haas One License #00174. 1988.**
Come! Live in the light! Shine with the joy and the love of the Lord!
We are called to be light for the kingdom, to live in the freedom of the city of God!
We are called to act with justice, we are called to love tenderly,
we are called to serve one another, to walk with humbly with God!

Come! Open your heart! Show your mercy to all those in fear!
We are called to be hope for the hopeless so all hatred and blindness will be no more!
Sing! Sing a new song! Sin of that great day when all will be one!
God will reign and we’ll walk with each other as sisters and brothers united in love!
