10th Sunday after Pentecost – 8/14/22

Call to Worship:
L: We have gathered in God’s holy presence,
All: the One who etches grace on our hearts.
L: This is the place where God will transform us into disciples.
All: We glorify our God, who yearns for justice, not just for a favored few, but for the least of our world.
L: This is the place where God will write compassion on our souls.
All: We give thanks to God for unceasing grace; we remember God’s persistence in saving us. This is the place where God will breathe the Word into our lives.

Song – Since Jesus Came Into My Heart – TFWS 2140
R. H. McDaniel and Charles H. Gabriel CCLI#71650
What a wonderful change in my life has been wrought since Jesus came into my heart!
I have light in my soul for which long I had sought, since Jesus came into my heart!
Refrain
Since Jesus came into my heart, since Jesus came into my heart,
floods of joy o’er my soul like the sea billows roll, since Jesus came into my heart.

I have ceased from my wandering and going astray, since Jesus came into my heart!
And my sins, which were many, are all washed away, since Jesus came into my heart!
Refrain
There’s a light in the valley of death now for more, since Jesus came into my heart!
And the gates of the City beyond I can see, since Jesus came into my heart!
Refrain

Into My Heart – TFWS 2160
Harry D. Clarke CCLI# 10044
Into my heart, into my heart, come into my heart, Lord Jesus;
come in today, come in to stay; come into my heart, Lord Jesus.
Out of my heart, out of my heart, shine out of my heart, Lord Jesus;
shine out today, shine out always; shine out of my heart, Lord Jesus.

Prayer:
(All) Holy God, with the precious jewel of holy scripture, you share with us the treasure of your heart. Engrave your covenant -your hopes, your dreams, your vision, your peace -upon our hearts, that they might beat as one with yours. Amen

Scripture Reading – Luke 18:1-8
Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people. In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Grant me justice against my accuser.’ For a while he refused, but later he said to himself, ‘Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.’ ”And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them? I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

Song – There Is a Balm in Gilead – UMH 375
African-American spiritual CCLI# 234002
Refrain:
There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole;
there is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin sick soul.

Sometimes I feel discouraged, and think my work’s in vain.
But then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again.
Refrain
Don’t ever feel discouraged, for Jesus is your friend,
and if you look for knowledge he’ll ne’er refuse to lend.
Refrain
If you can’t preach like Peter, if you can’t pray like Paul,
just tell the love of Jesus, and say he died for all.
Refrain

Prayer of Intercession

Our Offering – How will we serve and honor God this week?

Song – They’ll Know We are Christians by Our Love – TFWS 2223
Peter Scholtes CCLI# 26997
We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord,
we are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord.
And we pray that all unity may one day be restored.
Refrain:
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love;
yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand,
we will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand,
and together we’ll spread the news that God is in our land.
Refrain
We will work with each other, we will work side by side,
we will work with each other, we will work side by side,
and we’ll guard human dignity and save human pride.
Refrain
All praise to the Father, from whom all things come,
and all praise to Christ Jesus, God’s only Son,
and all praise to the Spirit, who makes us one.
Refrain
