3rd Sunday of Advent – 12/11/2022

Call to Worship
L: To a young woman whose heart longed for justice, God revealed the heavenly plan to bring about peace through justice.
All: The Lord has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant, Mary.
L: The Lord will show mercy to the humble who revere God.
All: The Mighty One will scatter the proud, bring down the powerful, lift up the lowly and fill the hungry with good things.
L: The Lord will turn over the order of things just as Jesus turned over the tables in the Temple.
All: My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.

Song – People, Look East – UMH 202
Eleanor Farjeon CCLI#3011380
People, look east. The time is near of the crowning of the year.
Make your house fair as you are able, trim the hearth and set the table.
People, look east and sing today. Love, the Guest is on the way.
Furrows, be glad. Though earth is bare, one more seed is planted there.
Give up your strength the seed to nourish, that in course the flower may flourish.
People, look east and sing today. Love, the Rose, is on the way.
Stars, keep the watch. When night is dim, on more light the bowl shall brim,
shining beyond the frosty weather, bright as sun, and moon together.
People, look east and sing today. Love, the Star, is on the way.
Angels announce with shouts of mirth him who brings new life to earth.
Set every peak and valley humming with the word, the Lord is coming.
People, look east and sing today. Love, the Lord, is on the way.

Advent Candle Lighting
L: A prophet tells us how God comes- through someone who receives God’s spirit and through a community that hears the good news: In Isaiah 61:1-3 we hear: The Spirit of the Living God is upon me because has anointed me to announce good news to the humble, to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to captives, and release to those in prison, to comfort all who mourn, to give them garlands instead of ashes, oil of gladness instead of mourners’ tears. (light pink candle) We light our third candle as a sign of hope that the Spirit of God may anoint us to show God’s liberating love. Living God, proclaim liberty to captives.
All: Set us free, that we may free others. Bind our wounds, that we may heal others. Fill us with your Spirit, and anoint us with your love.

Prayer: (all) God of light, you sent a savior into the world to bring justice and release to all who are in bondage. Shine this light upon us, and show us how to bring justice and peace to all who suffer. We pray these things in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Scripture Reading – Isaiah 42:1-9
Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry out or lift up his voice or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth, and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness; I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them.
L: For the Word of God in scripture; for the Word of God within us and for the Word of God among us we say:
All: Thanks be to God.

Song – Prepare the Way, O Zion
Prepare the way, O Zion, ye awful deeps rise high;
sink low, ye lofty mountains, the Lord is drawing nigh;
The righteous King of glory, foretold in sacred story.
O blest is he that came in God the Father’s name!
Fling wide your portals, Zion, and hail your glorious King;
his tidings of salvation to every people bring,
who, waiting, still in sadness, would sing his praise with gladness.
O blest is he that came in God the Father’s name.
The throne which he ascended is fixed in heaven above;
his everlasting kingdom is light and joy and love;
Let us his praise be sounding for grace and peace abounding.
O blest is he that comes in God the Father’s name.

Song – Star Child
Shirley Erena Murray and Carlton R. Young CCLI# 1929319
Star Child, earth Child, go between of God, love Child, Christ Child, heaven’s lightening rod.
This year, this year, let the day arrive when Christmas comes for everyone, everyone alive.

Street child, beat child, no place left to go, hurt child, used child, no one wants to know.
Grown child, old child, memory full of years, sad child, lost child, story told in tears.
Spared child, spoiled child, having, wanting more, wise child, faith child, knowing joy in store.
Hope for peace Child, God’s stupendous sign, down to earth Child, Star of stars that shine.
