Blessed to be a Blessing – 9/18/2022

Call to Worship:
L: Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens.
All:  Your faithfulness to the clouds.
L: How precious is your steadfast love, O God.
All: All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

Song – To God Be the Glory – UMH 98
To God be the glory, great things he hath done!
So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
who yielded his life an atonement for sin,
and opened the life gate that all may go in.
Refrain:
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice!

O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
and give him the glory, great things he hath done!

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
o every believer the promise of God;
the vilest offender who truly believes,
that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.
Refrain
Great things he hath taught us, great things he hath done,
and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
but purer, and higher, and greater will be
our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.
Refrain

Prayer:
(All) God of covenant, you promised Abraham land, descendants, and blessing so that he might be a blessing for all.  Show us how to honor the covenant, so that we might be a blessing to others.  We pray these things in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.  Amen

Scripture Reading – Genesis 12:1-8
Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.  I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.  I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Abram took his wife Sarai and his brother’s son Lot and all the possessions that they had gathered and the persons whom they had acquired in Haran, and they set forth to go to the land of Canaan. When they had come to the land of Canaan, Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. From there he moved on to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east, and there he built an altar to the Lord and invoked the name of the Lord.

Reaffirmation of Faith – UMH 33
P:  Brothers and sisters in Christ: through the Sacrament of Baptism we are initiated into Christ’s holy church.  We are incorporated into God’s mighty acts of salvation and given new birth through water and the Spirit.  All this is God’s gift, offered to us without price.  Through the reaffirmation of our faith, we renew the covenant declared at our baptism, acknowledge what God is doing for us, and affirm our commitment to Christ’s holy church.  Do you as Christ’s body, the church, reaffirm both your rejection of sin and your commitment to Christ?
All:  We do.
P:  Will you nurture one another in the Christian faith and life?
All:  With God’s help we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ.  We will pray for this community of faith; participate in its ministries; and faithfully use our God-given gifts and resources to build up this body and to be in service to others beyond its doors; so that others will experience God’s gracious love, healing and transforming power, merciful justice and everlasting peace.

Song – Take Me to the Water – WAS 3165
Take me to the water.  Take me to the water.
Take me to the water.  Take me to the water to be baptized.
None but the righteous, none but the righteous,
none but the righteous shall see God.
I love Jesus, I love Jesus,
I love Jesus, yes, I do.
He’s my Savior.  He’s my Savior.
He’s my Savior.   He’s my Savior, yes, he is.

Announcements

Song – The Spirit Sends Us Forth to Serve – TFWS 2241
The Spirit sends us forth to serve; we go in Jesus’ name
to bring glad tidings to the poor, God’s favor to proclaim.
We go to comfort those who mourn and set the burdened free;
where hope is dim, to share a dream and help the blind to see.
We go to be the hands of Christ, to scatter joy like seed
and, all our days, to cherish life, to do the loving deed.
Then let us go to serve in peace, the gospel to proclaim.
God’s Spirit has empowered us; we go in Jesus’ name.
