Christmas Day – 12/25/2022

Call to Worship
L: All hail! Let there be joy!
All: hail to the King, blessed is he
L: The peace of earth to him
All: the joy of heaven to him.
L: The homage of a King be his.
All: The King of all victory.
L: The welcome of a Lamb be his. Lamb of all glory; the Son of glory down from on high.
All: All hail, let there be joy.
L: Deep in the night the voice of the waves on the shore announced to us:
All: Christ is born! Son of the King of kings from the land of salvation, the mountains glowed to him, the plains glowed to him.
L: Then shone the sun on the mountains high to him
All: All hail, let there be joy.
L: God the Lord has opened a door. Christ of hope, Door of joy.
All: Son of Mary, hasten to help me. In me, Lord Christ, let there be joy.

Song – Angels We Have Heard on High – UMH 238
Angels we have heard on high sweetly singing o’er the plains.
And the mountains in reply echoing their joyous strains.
Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be which inspire your heavenly song?
Come to Bethlehem and see Christ whose birth the angels sing; come adores on bended knee, Christ the Lord, the newborn king.
See him in a manger laid, whom the choirs of angels praise;
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, while our hearts in love we raise.

Scripture Reading – Isaiah 9:6-7
For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and righteousness from this time onward and forevermore.

Anthem: Christmas Bells are Ringing Choir

Baptism Covenant – UMH 33
Invitation to Confession: When we come into the holy presence of God, our own humanity is laid bare. When we stand in the living presence of truth, our own falsehood is revealed. People of God, let us acknowledge who we are and ask our ever-present God to forgive us.

Prayer of Confession:
All: Renewing God, trusting in your infinite grace, we confess that we need your healing and your forgiveness. For all that is broken in our minds and bodies, we ask your healing. For all that is amiss in our choices and our relationships, we ask your forgiveness. For all that works against life and blessing in our hearts and in this world, we open ourselves to your transforming grace. Heal us, forgive us, and make us new. Amen

Holy Communion – All are invited and welcome at the Lord’s Table
P: The Lord be with you
All: And also with you.
P: Lift up your hearts.
All: We lift them up to the Lord.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
P: And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
P: As we proclaim the mystery of our faith:
All: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

The Lord’s Prayer – UMH 895
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Song – What Child Is This (v. 1, 2) – UMH 219
What child is this, who laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary.
Why lies he in such mean estate where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christians, fear, for sinners here the silent Word is pleading.
This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary.

Prayer of Thanksgiving – Almighty God, Comforter, Redeemer, Savior, Creator, and Deliverer, remind us that your names exhaust our imagination because you are all things that offer life and love. We celebrate this gift of “Christ is born” to us and for us. Fill our mouths with praise and thanksgiving. “By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” Amen

Song – God Bless Ye Merry Gentlemen
God rest ye merry gentlemen, let nothing you dismay.
Remember Christ the Savior was born on Christmas Day.
To save us all from satan’s power when we were gone astray
oh tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, oh tidings of comfort and joy.
Fear not then said the angel, let nothing you affright.
This day is born a Savior of a pure virgin bright,
to free all those who trust in him from satan’s power and might.
Oh tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, of tidings of comfort and joy.

Benediction – The light that enlivens all the world, the light that darkness cannot overcome, love’s pure light in Jesus Christ, shine on you and in our world this night. Amen
