Hymn – ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus – UMH 462
‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, and to take him at his word;
just to rest upon his promise, and to know, “Thus saith the Lord.”
Refrain
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him! How I’ve proved him o’er and
o’er! Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust him more

O how sweet to trust in Jesus, just to trust his cleansing blood; and in
simple faith to plunge me neath the healing, cleansing flood!
Refrain
Yes, ‘tis sweet to trust in Jesus, just from sin and self to cease;
just from Jesus simply taking life and rest, and joy and peace.
Refrain
I’m so glad I learned to trust thee, precious Jesus, Savior, friend;
and I know that thou art with me, wilt be with me to the end.
Refrain

Opening Prayer – Liturgist
Loving God, as you speak to us through your scriptures: Help us to hear anew what you would speak to us this day. For your word is always fresh, a message of life and hope in the world that needs to know and heed your will. Through Chris the living Word and your Spirit of illumination who with you is the truth that sets us free. Amen

Scripture Reading – Luke 7:1-10
After Jesus had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly, and who was ill and close to death. When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave. When they came to Jesus, they appealed to him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy of having you do this for him, for he loves our people, and it is he who built our synagogue for us.” And Jesus went with them, but when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; therefore I did not presume to come to you. But only speak the word, and let my servant be healed. For I also am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and the slave does it.” When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, he said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.
L: The Word of God in scripture; for the Word of God within us and for the Word of God among us we say:
All: Thanks be to God.

Message – From Fear to Trust – Pastor Gayle

Prayer of Confession – UMH 12
Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will, we have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Passing the Peace – May the peace of Christ be with you.

Pastoral Prayer

Offering – Joyfully offering our time, talent, energy, and resources
Hymn – We Walk by Faith (vs. 1 and 3) – TFWS 2196
We walk by faith, and not by sight; No gracious words we hear
of him who spoke as none e’er spoke, but we believe him near.
Help then, O Lord, our unbelief, and may our faith abound;
to call on you when you are near, and seek where you are found.
Doxology – UMH 95

Holy Communion
The Great Thanksgiving – UMH 13
Pastor: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them up to the Lord.
Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Pastor: And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Pastor: in union with Christ’s offering for us as we proclaim the mystery of faith:
All: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.

The Lord’s Prayer – UMH 895
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory for ever. Amen.

Sharing the Bread and Cup
All are invited to the Lord’s table to receive the bread (the body of Christ, the Bread of heaven) and the cup (the blood of Christ, the cup of salvation).

Prayer of Thanksgiving – UMH 11
