Call to Worship:
L: O send out your light and your truth, Lord.
All: Let them bring us to your holy hill and dwelling.
L: Then we will go to the altar of God, to God, our exceeding joy.
All: and we will praise you with all our heart and strength.

Hymn – Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies – UMH 173
Sing to “Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me” tune
Christ, whose glory fills the skies, Christ, the true, the only light,
Sun of Righteousness, arise, triumph o’er the shades of night;
Dayspring from on high, be near; Daystar, in my heart appear.
Dark and cheerless is the morn unaccompanied by thee;
joyless is the day’s return, till thy mercy’s beams I see;
till they inward light impart, cheer my eyes and warm my heart.
Visit then this soul of mine; pierce the gloom of sin and grief;
fill me, Radiancy divine, scatter all my unbelief;
more and more thyself display, shining to the perfect day.

Prayer:
(All) Radiant God, you revealed yourself in your son, Jesus, when he was transfigured on the mountain before his disciples. Reveal yourself to us daily, so we might enlighten others with the good news of your love. We pray these things in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen

Scripture Reading – Matthew 16:27-17:8
“For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done.    Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves.    And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became bright as light.    Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.    Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will set up three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”    While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!”    When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear.    But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.”   And when they raised their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone.
L: For the Word of God in scripture; for the Word of God within us and for the Word of God among us we say:
All: Thanks be to God.

Message

Pastoral Prayer

Prayer of Confession – UMH 8
Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will, we have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

P: Hear the good news: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners; that proves God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!
All: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Glory to God. Amen

Passing the Peace

The Great Thanksgiving – UMH 9
P: The Lord be with you
All: And also with you
P: Lift up your hearts.
All: We lift them up to the Lord.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God
All: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
P: And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
P: And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us as we proclaim the mystery of faith.
All: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.

The Lord’s Prayer – UMH 895
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory. Amen,

Song – Shine, Jesus, Shine – The Faith We Sing 2173
Refrain:
Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory,
blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire;
flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy,
send forth your word, Lord, and let there be light.

Lord, the light of your love is shining
in the midst of the darkness shining;
Jesus, Light of the World, shine upon us,
set us free by the truth you now bring us.
Shine on me, shine on me.
Refrain
Lord, I come to your awesome presence
from the shadows into your radiance;
by the blood I may enter your brightness,
search me, try me, consume all my darkness.
Shine on me, shine on me.
Refrain
As we gaze on your kingly brightness,
so our faces display your likeness;
ever changing from glory to glory,
mirrored here may our lives tell your story.
Shine on me, shine on me.
Refrain
