Call to Worship
L: Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
All: I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
L: Surely he will save you and cover you and under his wings you will find refuge.
All: I will not fear, God’s faithfulness is my shield to guard me in all my ways.

Song – O God, Our Help in Ages Past – UMH 117
O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come,
our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home!
Under the shadow of thy throne, still may we dwell secure;
sufficient is thine arm alone, and our defense is sure.
Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame,
from everlasting, thou art God, to endless years the same.
A thousand ages, in thy sight, are like an evening gone;
short as the watch that ends the nigh, before the rising sun.
Time, like an ever rolling stream, bears all who breathe away;
they fly forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day.
O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come;
be thou our guide while life shall last, and our eternal home.

Prayer:
(All) God of strength, your son Jesus withstood many temptations because his love for you was greater than his earthly desires. Make our love for you so strong, that we might withstand anything that threatens to stand between us and your love. We pray these things in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Scripture Reading – Matthew 3:13-4:1-11
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw God’s Spirit descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from the heavens said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tested by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’ ” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! for it is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’ ” Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.
L: For the Word of God in scripture; for the Word of God within us and for the Word of God among us we say:
All: Thanks be to God.

Pastoral Prayer

Song – You Who Are Thirsty – TFWS 2132
You who are thirsty, come to the well and drink from waters flowing.
You who are hungry, come to the bread and eat of his holiness.
You who are tired, find rest. You, who are weak, find strength.
You who are thirsty, come to the well and drink.
You who are thirsty, come to the well and drink from waters flowing.
You who are hungry, come to the bread and eat of his holiness.
You who are tired, find rest. You who are weak, find strength.
You who are thirsty, come to the well and drink.
He will freely feed all of them who are weak.
He will quench the righteous thirst of all who humbly seek.
He will freely feed all of them who are weak.
He will quench the righteous thirst of all who humbly seek.

Lord, we trust you to help us to journey beyond the familiar and into the unknown. Give us faith to leave old ways and break fresh ground with you. We believe you will make a way for us and provide for us if only we trust you and obey. Focus our minds and our hearts upon you. Strengthen us with your blessing and appoint us to the task at hand. Teach us to live with eternity in view. Tune our spirits to the music of heaven. Amen.
