Scripture Litany – Psalm 118: 1-2, 19-29
Leader: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever!
All: Let the people say, “God’s steadfast love endures forever.”
Leader: Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord.
All: This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it.
Leader: The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing, it is marvelous in our eyes.

Prayer – Pastor Gayle

Scripture Reading – Philippians 2:5-11
Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
L: The Word of God in scripture; for the Word of God within us and for the Word of God among us we say:
All: Thanks be to God.

Message – From Self-Preservation to Self-Emptying – Pastor Gayle

Prayer of Confession
Most merciful God, we your Church confess that often our spirit has not been that of Christ. Where we have failed to love one another as he loves us, where we have pledged loyalty to him with our lips and then betrayer, deserted, or denied him, where we have filled ourselves up with resentment, bitterness, hate, intolerance, impatience, ingratitude, pride, jealousy, self-pity, and unforgiveness, forgive us we pray. Help us to empty ourselves of all of these and by your Spirit make us faithful in every time of trial through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pardon:
Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ. But Christ suffered and died for us, was raised from the dead and ascended on high for us, and continues to intercede for us. Believe the good news: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!
All: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Glory to God. Amen

Reading – The disciples fall asleep

Hymn – Go to Dark Gethsemane – UMH 290
Go to dark Gethsemane, ye that feel the tempter’s power;
your Redeemer’s conflict see, watch with him one bitter hour.
Turn not from his griefs away; learn of Jesus Christ to pray.

Reading – Jesus is betrayed
Reading – Jesus is put on trial

Hymn – Go to Dark Gethsemane – UMH 290
See him at the judgment hall, beaten, bound, reviled, arraigned;
O the wormwood and the gall! O the pangs his soul sustained!
Shun not suffering, shame or loss, learn of Christ to bear the cross.

Reading – Jesus is sentenced

Hymn – Ah, Holy Jesus – UMH 289
Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended,
that we to judge thee have in hate pretended?
By foes derided, by thine own rejected, O most afflicted!
Act of contrition and hope

Hymn – O, How He Loves You and Me – TFWS 2108
O how he loves you and me! O how he loves you and me!
He gave his life, what more could he give?
O, how he loves you; O, how he loves me;
O, how he loves you and me.
Jesus on Calvary did go; his love for sinners to show.
What he did there brought hope from despair.
O how he loves you; O how he loves me;
O how he loves you and me!

Benediction – Go in peace
May Jesus Christ emptied himself out and became obedient even to death on the cross for our sakes, keep you and strengthen you this week, the most holy of all weeks.
