Welcome
Call to Worship:
L: It is God who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’
All: And has shone in our hearts to give us the light of knowledge of God’s glory in the face of Jesus Christ.
L: We have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us.
All: We may be afflicted in every way, but are not crushed; perplexed but not driven to despair; persecuted but not forsaken; stuck down, but not destroyed. Glory to God! Amen
Hymn – When Morning Gilds the Skies – UMH 185
When morning gilds the skies my heart awaking cries:
May Jesus Christ be praised!
Alike at work and prayer, to Jesus I repair:
May Jesus Christ be praised!
The night becomes as day when from the heart we say:
May Jesus Christ be praised!
The powers of darkness fear when this sweet chant they hear:
May Jesus Christ be praised!
Let all the earth around ring joyous with the sound:
May Jesus Christ be praised!
In heaven’s eternal bliss the loveliest strain is this:
May Jesus Christ be praised!
Be this, while life is mine, my canticle divine:
May Jesus Christ be praised!
Be this the eternal song through all the ages long:
May Jesus Christ be praised!
Opening Prayer:
Word of God, come down on earth, living rain from heaven. Touch our hearts and bring to birth- faith, hope and love unending. Bring your truth to lead us, speak and heal our mortal blindness so that the world may be healed and creation restored to your original design. Amen.
Scripture Reading – Mark 2:23-28
One sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?” And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the high priests to eat, and he gave some to his companions.” Then he said to them, “The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.”

Pastoral Prayer
Prayer of Confession
Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will, we have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Pastor: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!
Congregation: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
All: Glory to God. Amen.

Prayer of Blessing: O God, most merciful and gracious, of whose bounty we have all received, accept this offering of your people. Remember in your love those who have brought it and those for whom it is given, and so follow it with your blessing that it may promote peace and goodwill among all peoples and advance the reign of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen
Holy Communion
Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another.

Pastor: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Pastor: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them up to the Lord.
Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Pastor: …We praise your name and join their unending hymn:
People: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Pastor: …As we proclaim the mystery of faith
People: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.
The Lord’s Prayer – UMH 895
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
Prayer of Thanksgiving: Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which you have given yourself to us. Grant that we may go into the world in the strength of your Spirit, to give ourselves for others, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
